INDIANAPOLIS – Cleveland State and Green Bay will represent #HLWBB in postseason play with the Vikings opening the NCAA Tournament on Saturday at Villanova and the Phoenix hosting a WNIT matchup on Thursday.
#HLWBB NEWS & NOTES
- In the March 14 College Insider Women’s Mid-Major Top 25 poll, Cleveland State ranked No. 6 while Green Bay ranked No. 10.
- Cleveland State is making its third appearance in the NCAA Tournament after winning its third #HLWBB title on March 7. The Vikings previously took on Stanford in 2008 and Notre Dame in 2010 and are seeking their first NCAA Tournament victory.
- As of March 14, Cleveland State is second in the country in free throws made per game (17.06) and fifth in free throw attempts per game (23.82). CSU leads the Horizon League in scoring offense (74.5 points), scoring margin (17.1), rebounds (42.1) and blocked shots (4.0).
- #HLWBB Player of the Year Destiny Leo leads the HL and the Vikings in scoring (17.7 points), free throw percentage (.908), three-point field goal percentage (.388) and three-point field goals per game (2.56). Amele Ngwafang paces CSU with 7.7 rebounds per game while freshman Jordana Reisma totals 1.26 blocks per game.
- Gabriella Smith led the Vikings with 19 points in the title matchup with Green Bay while Brittni Moore posted a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Championship MVP Destiny Leo scored 13 points while Horizon League Sixth Player of the Year Deja Williams chipped in 10 points in the victory.
- CSU advanced to the championship game with a victory over Northern Kentucky in overtime in the second semifinal. Leo paced the Vikings with 25 points, Moore added a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds and Smith chipped in 14 points.
- Green Bay is making its seventh appearance in the WNIT. The Phoenix battled Minnesota in the opening round last season.
- As of March 14, Green Bay ranks fourth nationally in field goal percentage defense (33.6) and turnovers per game (11.6) while the Phoenix are 11th in scoring defense (54.0) and ninth in assist-turnover ratio (1.32).
- GB’s Bailey Butler paces the League with a 2.32 assist-turnover ratio and ranks second with 4.1 assists per game. Sydney Levy leads the Phoenix with 11.6 points and 2.2 three-point field goals per game.
- Natalie McNeal posted an 18-point, 13-rebound double-double for the Phoenix in the #HLWBB championship game.
- GB advanced to the championship game with a win over Purdue Fort Wayne in the semifinals. Cassie Schiltz led the Phoenix with 17 points while Levy added 14 points. Butler and McNeal also scored in double figures.
