The Green Bay Phoenix will play in March Madness after winning its 17
th League title. No. 2 seed Green Bay reclaimed its spot atop the League with a 64-40 championship game win over top seed Cleveland State in the Barbasol Horizon League Women’s Basketball Championship game. Green Bay (27-6) is in the NCAA bracket for the first time since 2018.
Dig Deeper:
- “Cleveland State has a great program, it’s been the two of us battling it out the past couple of years,” Green Bay head coach Kevin Borseth said. “Today was our day. I’m happy for our players and really excited for them.”
- Tournament MVP Natalie McNeal scored a game-high 32 points on 15-for-21 shooting while also grabbing eight rebounds. Cassie Schiltz scored eight points with six rebounds and five assists.
- McNeal scored 22 points in the second half – including 14 in the fourth quarter – to help Green Bay pull away.
- It was clearly Green Bay’s day early, as a blocked 3-pointer in the first half fell into hands of Jenna Guyer, who scored on a turnaround baseline jumper. McNeal added a bucket and then Guyer scored again to put Green Bay ahead 27-15. The Phoenix would continue getting stops to take a 32-19 lead into halftime.
- Green Bay led 47-29 after three quarters, limiting CSU to just 35 percent shooting and one offensive rebound. The Phoenix extended the lead by attacking the CSU zone and holding the Vikings to their lowest scoring output since March 6, 2019 (also against Green Bay).
- Cleveland State, last year’s champion, had beaten Green Bay in March in each of the last three seasons. Colbi Maples scored 22 points for the Vikings.
- “The Horizon League has great women’s basketball, it’s as good as it’s ever been,” Borseth said. “I’ve been around longer than anybody probably, and from a coaching standpoint and a players’ standpoint, the league is as good as it’s ever been.”
