Belmont, Chicago State and Cleveland State Punch Tickets to Sunday’s #HLTennis Championship Matches

WEST LAFAYETTE, IND. (April 27, 2024) – In Saturday’s #HLTennis semifinal action, Belmont and Cleveland State won in the men’s contests and Cleveland State and Chicago State clinched championship berths on the women’s side.
 

Belmont 4, Tennessee Tech 0
  • Belmont defeated Tennessee Tech in the first men’s semifinal by a score of 4-0.
  • The match started with Belmont taking No. 3 doubles for the deciding point by a score of 7-6(5).
  • All-League First Team member Ian Cruz claimed the second point for the Bruins at No. 3, 6-0, 6-0.
  • Another All-League First Team selection Tomas Luis defeated Murilo Burckhard 6-4, 6-0 at No. 2.
  • In the final match, Gabriel Sardo clinched the No. 6 spot with two 6-2 victories.
  • Belmont faces Cleveland State in the men’s championship on Sunday at 11 a.m. ET in a matchup between the two regular season division winners.
 
Cleveland State 4, Tennessee State 3
  • The North Division No. 1 seed Cleveland State took down South Division No. 2 seed Tennessee State, 4-3.
  • Tennessee State won No. 1 doubles, 6-3 to take the first point of the semifinal after the first two doubles matchups split.
  • At No. 2 singles, Taj Hibbert beat Mikael Erler, 6-4, 6-3, to give the Tigers an early 2-0 lead in the match.
  • The Vikings fought back and brought the score even at 2-2, with victories by Lincoln Battle and Kade Mindry.
  • Chris Bogelin won No. 6 in straight sets 7-6(2), 6-1, to put the Tigers in front again.
  • Carl Gedlitschka and Nico Jamison ended the match with three set victories of their own to give Cleveland State the 4-3 victory.
    • Gedlitschka clinched the No. 4 spot, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3.
    • Jamison finished on top, 3-6, 7-6(5), 6-4 at No. 5.
  • The Vikings will face the Bruins at 11 a.m. ET on ESPN+ for the right to be crowned 2024 Horizon League Men’s Tennis champions.
 
Cleveland State 4, Northern Kentucky 3
  • The No. 1 seed Vikings ousted the No. 5 seed Norse, 4-3, in the first women’s semifinal.
  • NKU secured the doubles point through wins at No. 1 and 3 via Alyssa Cameron and Mariajose Hernandez and Ashlee Fisk and Catharina Cardoso.
  • Bethany Yauch finished her match to beat Mariajose Hernandez, 6-2, 6-1 to bring the Vikings even at 1-1.
  • The Norse regained the lead as Alyssa Cameron collected a win at No. 3, 6-4, 6-2.
  • At No. 6, Catharina Cardoso defeated Filippa Frogner in three sets 2-6, 6-1, 6-2 to bring NKU within a point of reaching the #HLTennis championship match.
  • CSU then won three consecutive points to clinch the match and move on to the #HLTennis Women’s Championship on Sunday at 3 p.m. ET.
    • Oihane Vicario finished on top at No. 1, Sima Heren secured No. 2 and Ella Franz won the deciding match in three sets at No. 5.
 
Chicago State 4, Youngstown State 2
  • In the final match of the day, No. 3 Chicago State fended off No. 2 Youngstown State after a late push from the Penguins.
  • The doubles matches were split 1-1 until No. 1 was finished by the Cougars’ Manuella Eloundou and Nia Cooper, 7-6(4).
  • Chicago State gained a 3-0 lead after victories at No. 6 and 4 singles.
    • Helin Alvarez defeated Yeseniia Ovcharova, 7-5, 6-1, at No. 6.
    • Amina Taibi beat Elinor Beazley, 3-6, 6-4, 6-2, at No. 4.
  • Lorena Cedano got YSU on the board in No. 3 singles with a win in straight sets 7-6(3) and 6-3.
  • The Penguins Lili Minich defeated Cooper at No. 5, but Manuella Eloundou sent the Cougars to the championship with a comeback victory at No. 1.
  • Chicago State will take on Cleveland State for the 2024 #HLTennis Women’s Championship on Sunday at 3 p.m. ET on ESPN+.
