WEST LAFAYETTE, IND. (April 28, 2024) - Cleveland State secured the Men’s #HLTennis Championship with a 4-2 victory over Belmont on Sunday and Chicago State earned the Women’s #HLTennis Championship via a 4-2 win over Cleveland State. The Vikings and Cougars will represent #HLTennis as automatic qualifiers to the NCAA Tournament.
 

Cleveland State 4, Belmont 2
  • Cleveland State defeated Belmont, 4-2, to earn its first Men’s #HLTennis title since 2021.
  • The match began with the Vikings taking the doubles point.
    • Lincoln Battle and Devin Boyer defeated Tomas Luis and Gabriel Sardo at No. 3, 6-1.
    • Carl Gedlitschka and JuandeDios Abboud beat Niklas von Hellens and Ruben Busch at No. 1, 6-4.
  • No. 3 was the first singles match to finish, as Belmont’s Ian Cruz took down Kade Mindry in straight sets, 6-0, 6-3.
  • No. 1 was the next match to conclude with Player of the Year Alfred Wallin claiming the match for the Bruins, 6-0, 6-4, against Freshman of the Year Lincoln Battle.
  • Nico Jamison then tied the match for CSU at No. 5, taking down Ruben Busch, 6-3, 6-1.
  • Devin Boyer secured the third point for the Vikings against Gabriel Sardo at No. 6.
    • Boyer finished the match in two sets, 7-5, 6-2, to put the Vikings up, 3-2.
  • Cleveland State’s Carl Gedlitschka beat Belmont’s Niklas von Hellens, 6-2, 7-6(3), to clinch the 2024 Men’s #HLTennis Championship for the Vikings.
 

Chicago State 4, Cleveland State 2
  • Chicago State collected its first Women’s #HLTennis Championship with a 4-2 victory over Cleveland State.
  • The match started with the Vikings taking the first point in doubles.
    • Filippa Frogner and Mikae Konstantinova took No. 3 doubles over Katarina Dukic and Amina Taibi, 6-4.
    • At No. 1, Oihane Vicario and Sima Heren defeated Manuella Eloundou and Nia Cooper, 6-4.
  • The first singles match concluded at the No. 1 spot with a victory for the Cougars.
    • Manuella Eloundou beat Oihane Vicario in straight sets, 7-5, 6-3.
  • The next point went to Cleveland State and Sima Heren at the No. 2 position.
    • Heren defeated Katarina Dukic, 6-2, 6-3.
  • The Cougars then won three straight matches to secure the 2024 Women’s #HLTennis Championship.
    • Helin Alvarez beat Mikae Konstantinova, 6-2, 5-7, 6-1, at No. 6.
    • Nia Cooper outlasted Filippa Frogner, 6-3, 4-6, 6-1, at No. 5.
    • Amina Taibi held off Ella Franz, 6-4, 4-6, 7-6(3), to clinch the title.
