Milwaukee, Youngstown State and Purdue Fort Wayne Collect Wins on Opening Day of #HLBASE Championship

DAYTON, OHIO (May 22, 2024) – The 2024 #HLBASE Championship started on Wednesday with Milwaukee and Youngstown State picking up wins to open the action before Purdue Fort Wayne avoided elimination with a victory in game three.

  • No. 4 seed Milwaukee outlasted No. 5 seed Purdue Fort Wayne, 5-4, in the opening game of the championship.
    • The Panthers trailed 3-2 in the sixth inning before Tai Walton delivered an RBI double to tie the game at 3-3.
    • Gabe Roessler drove in the go-ahead run for Milwaukee later in the frame and Sean Tillmon added the fifth run with an RBI single in the seventh.
    • Luke Hansel picked up the win on the mound for the Panthers, tossing 7.1 innings and allowing two earned runs with six strikeouts.
    • Roessler and Carson Hansen posted two hits each for Milwaukee.
    • Grant Thoroman, Ben Higgins and Brooks Sailors led the Mastodons with two hits each.
    • MKE will take on No. 2 seed Northern Kentucky at 3 p.m. ET on Thursday.
  • No. 6 seed Youngstown State outlasted No. 3 seed Oakland, 13-10, in Wednesday’s second game.
    • In a back-and-forth battle, the Penguins trailed 10-9 heading into the ninth.
    • Ian Francis scored the first run of the inning on an RBI single before Teddy Ruffner cleared the bases with a three-RBI double to put YSU up 13-10.
    • Francis had four hits for the Penguins and Alejandro Covas scored five runs and totaled three hits.
    • John Lauinger paced the Golden Grizzlies with four hits and three RBIs.
    • YSU will face top-seeded Wright State at 11 a.m. ET on Thursday.
  • No. 5 seed Purdue Fort Wayne avoided elimination with a 14-8 win over Oakland in #HLBASE championship game three.
    • The Mastodons plated seven runs in the top of the second, including a three-run home run by Jacob Walker.
    • Walker and Nate Simpson had three hits each for Purdue Fort Wayne.
    • Four Golden Grizzlies recorded two hits each.
    • The ‘Dons will play in another elimination game at 7 p.m. ET on Thursday.
