Cleveland State, RMU and Northern Kentucky Earn Wins on #HLSB Day One

INDIANAPOLIS (May 8, 2024) – The 2024 #HLSB Championship began on Wednesday with Cleveland State and RMU opening with victories while Northern Kentucky split a pair of contests.

  • No. 5 seed RMU defeated No. 4 seed Northern Kentucky, 7-2, in Wednesday’s first game.
    • Courtney Poulich hit a grand slam in the first inning as the Colonials jumped out to a 5-0 lead.
    • Poulich added a solo shot in the fourth inning to push the lead to 6-0 and Catalina Saxen drove in another run for RMU in the seventh.
    • The Norse plated two in the bottom of the frame.
    • Jane Garver picked up the victory in the circle, allowing zero earned runs in 5.2 innings.
    • RMU will take on top-seeded Youngstown State at noon ET on Thursday, May 9.
  • No. 3 seed Cleveland State picked up a 2-1 victory over No. 6 seed IUPUI in game two.
    • Melissa Holzopfel collected the win in the circle, tossing a complete game with eight strikeouts.
    • The Jaguars scored first on a throwing error in the fifth.
    • Holzopfel delivered a run on a sac fly in the fifth to tie the game.
    • Emma Gilkerson blasted a solo shot in the sixth for the Vikings.
    • The Vikings are scheduled to battle No. 2 seed Oakland at 2:30 p.m. ET on Thursday.
  • In our first elimination game, Northern Kentucky collected a 3-2 win over IUPUI.
    • The Jags opened the scoring with a run in the first on a sac fly followed by an RBI single from Kelli Riordan in the second.
    • The Norse responded with a two-RBI single from Ella LeMonier in the third then Lexy Morris scored the game-winning run in the sixth on a passed ball.
    • Lauryn Hicks earned the win for NKU with two earned runs in the complete game.
    • Maddie Lacer led the Norse with two hits.
    • NKU will face elimination again at 5 p.m. ET on Thursday.
