Detroit Mercy, Oakland and Wright State Collect Wins in the Opening Round of the 2025 Barbasol #HLWBB Championship

INDIANAPOLIS (March 4, 2025) – The
2025 Barbasol Horizon League Women’s Basketball Championship commenced on Tuesday with Detroit Mercy, Oakland and Wright State picking up victories to advance to Thursday’s quarterfinals.

- No. 8 seed Wright State posted a 73-58 victory over No. 9 seed Youngstown State at the Nutter Center.
- Amaya Staton posted a 17-point, 27-rebound double-double for the Raiders, setting a new #HLWBB championship single game record and tying the League’s overall single game record.
- WSU outrebounded the Penguins, 44-26, totaling 17 second chance points.
- Haley Thierry and Jewel Watkins led YSU with 14 points each.
- The Raiders will travel to No. 2 seed Purdue Fort Wayne for the quarterfinals on Thursday at 7 p.m. ET.
- No. 6 seed Detroit Mercy earned a 73-62 win over No. 11 seed Milwaukee at Calihan Hall.
- The Titans finished with key advantages in points in the paint (38-20) and bench points (25-14).
- Makayla Jackson led Detroit Mercy with 25 points, shooting 10-12 from the field.
- Kamy Peppler paced the Panthers with 20 points.
- The Titans will head to Cleveland State for a quarterfinal matchup with the Vikings at 5:30 p.m. ET on Thursday.
- No. 10 seed Oakland outlasted No. 7 seed IU Indianapolis, 62-56, on the road.
- Maddy Skorupski scored 25 points to lead the Golden Grizzlies.
- Oakland held the Jaguars to just four points in the final quarter to secure the win.
- Katie Davidson led IU Indy with 21 points, adding eight rebounds.
- The Golden Grizzlies will take on top-seeded Green Bay at 8 p.m. ET on Thursday in the quarterfinals.
- No. 4 seed RMU will host No. 5 seed Northern Kentucky on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. ET in the fourth quarterfinal.
- Every game of the championship will be carried on ESPN networks with the first three rounds of the Barbasol Horizon League Women’s Basketball Championship streamed on ESPN+ and the championship game broadcast on ESPN2.
