#HLTennis Championship Quarterfinal Day Sends Four Teams To Semifinals

ANN ARBOR (April 25, 2025) – Day one of the #HLTennis Championships at the University of Michigan Varsity Tennis Center featured Northern Kentucky and Milwaukee moving on in women’s play while Youngstown State and Tennessee State advanced in the men’s bracket.
Women’s Quarterfinal No. 1
No. 4 Northern Kentucky 4, No. 5 IU Indianapolis 0
- NKU worked swiftly in doubles play to take the point. The No. 1 team of Majo Hernandez and Darya Gneidina blanked IU Indy’s Elle Kotre and Calli Sokolowski, 6-0.
- At No. 3 doubles, Ashlee Fisk and Ana Serrano paired for the Norse to down IU Indy’s Emma Dell and Hannan Awale, 6-1.
- Catharina Cardoso and Alyssa Cameron of NKU led IU Indy’s Grace Lampan and Chloe Bailey, 4-1, at No. 2 doubles as the doubles point was secured for the Norse.
- Singles play was all Norse. Alyssa Cameron efficiently defeated IU Indy’s Hannan Awale, 6-0, 6-0 to get things started at No. 6 singles.
- In the No. 1 slot, NKU’s Ashlee Fisk kept the momentum going with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over IU Indy’s Emma Dell.
- Majo Hernandez helped the Norse’s cause by defeating IU Indy’s Grace Lampman at No. 5 singles.
- The NKU quarterfinal win sets up a semifinal clash with the top seed Cleveland State Vikings at 11:30 a.m. ET on Saturday, April 26.
Women’s Quarterfinal No. 2
No. 6 Milwaukee 4, No. 3 Oakland 2
- Milwaukee snagged the doubles point as the Panthers’ top two teams overwhelmed Oakland.
- In the top slot, Milwaukee’s Nadiaa Konieva and Sara Siminova paired to defeat Oakland’s Edia Hammond and Emilia Jarvinen, 6-1.
- At No. 2 doubles, the Panthers fought off the Panthers, 6-3, with Nikola Nikolajeva and Laure Rizet defeating Ida Hulqvist and Martyna Piechowicz.
- Oakland’s No. 3 team of Nisa Bulut and Tara Montreuil were leading Milwaukee’s Elisa Rubio and Emilia Durska, 5-4, as doubles play ended.
- Singles play was a tough slog as the teams battled until nearly 1 p.m. ET.
- In the No. 1 singles match, Milwaukee’s Nadiaa Konieva knocked off Oakland’s Emilia Jarvinen, 7-5, 6-4.
- Elisa Rubio picked up a win at No. 5 singles for Milwaukee by beating Oakland’s Tara Montreuil, 6-4, 6-3.
- Sara Simonova helped clinch a spot in the semis with a gritty win at No. 6 singles for the Panthers. She beat Ida Hultqvist, 6-0, 4-6, 6-3.
- Oakland’s Nisa Bulut (No. 2 singles) and Martyna Piechowicz (No. 4 singles) earned points for the Golden Grizzlies.
- Milwaukee’s win advances the Panthers to Semifinal Saturday and a date with the No. 2 seed Youngstown State at 11:30 a.m. ET on Saturday, April 26.
Men’s Quarterfinal No. 1
No. N2 Youngstown State 4, No. S3 Southern Indiana 0
- In a lengthy doubles competition, it was Youngstown State grabbing the point thanks to wins at No. 2 and 3 doubles.
- Onder Balci teamed with Ethan Dasset for the Penguins to defeat Eytan Michaeli and Quinten Gillespie of USI, 6-3.
- At No. 3 doubles, it was a 6-4 win for Youngstown State’s Viktor Van Craenenbroeck and Mihai Haita over Southern Indiana’s Mathys Bove and Adam Koon.
- As the match pivoted to singles play, the Penguins found a groove thanks to the No. 1 position play of Onder Balci. Balci bested Southern Indiana’s Mathys Bove, 6-2, 6-0.
- Ethan Dasset (No. 3 singles) and Mihai Haita (No. 5 singles) were victorious by identical 6-2, 6-4 scores for Youngstown State over USI’s Eytan Michaeli and Quinten Gillespie, respectively.
- By virtue of their win, the Penguins advance to play No. S1 seed, Belmont, on Saturday, April 26 at 3:30 p.m. ET.
Men’s Quarterfinal No. 2
No. S2 Tennessee State 4, No. N3 IU Indianapolis 0
- Tennessee State jumped out on the Jaguars with swift wins at No. 1 and 3 doubles.
- Rohan Loubser and Taj Hibbert coasted for Tennessee State in the No. 1 position, 6-0, over IU Indy’s Nate Day and Konner Gunwall.
- At No. 3 doubles for Tennessee State, Jonasz Dziopak and Alex Adamec defeated Steven Paz and Will Thurin of IU Indy, 6-2.
- IU Indy’s duo of Noah Viste and Kamil Kozerski led TSU’s Adler Germinal and Tat Mutetwa, 5-3, prior to the doubles point being decided.
- Singles play between the two programs was charged, neither giving an inch. However, Tennessee State thrived thanks to late-set shot-making.
- That was evident at No. 1 singles as Jonasz Dziopak survived the first set for the Tigers vs. IU Indy’s Kamil Kozerski, ultimately prevailing, 7-6, 6-2.
- Taj Hibbert handled business at No. 2 singles for Tennessee State knocking off Noah Viste for the Jaguars, 6-3, 6-2.
- Alex Adamec, playing at No. 4 singles for TSU, found the edge late in set two, eventually beating IU Indy’s Eli Mercer, 6-4, 7-6.
- Tennessee State continues their championship aspirations in the semifinals on Saturday, April 26, at 3:30 p.m. ET against No. N1 Cleveland State.
