Cleveland State Awarded 2024-25 McCafferty Trophy Following Recalculation
INDIANAPOLIS (July 11, 2025) – The Cleveland State Vikings have been awarded the 2024-25 McCafferty Trophy and are the outright winners of the Women’s All-Sports Award. This is the third McCafferty Trophy for the Vikings and the first Women’s All-Sports Award honor. Youngstown State won the Men’s All-Sports Award.
In May, the League office incorrectly announced that Youngstown State captured this year’s McCafferty Trophy while Cleveland State, Milwaukee and RMU shared the Women’s All-Sports Award. Youngstown State was correctly awarded the Men’s All-Sports Award. The Horizon League team deeply regrets this significant error.
From the Commissioner:
“I apologize to our student-athletes, coaches, staffs and administrators. We made a serious and unacceptable mistake with the standings calculation of the prestigious McCafferty Trophy and the Women’s All-Sports Award,” said Horizon League Commissioner, Julie Roe Lach. “We strive to create major experiences and we fell short. Our staff is committed to a complete review of our internal processes. I am personally appreciative of the understanding from the leaders at our affected schools. We congratulate Cleveland State and celebrate their terrific success.”
Dig Deeper:
- The Cleveland State women’s programs paced the Vikings as the volleyball team won the League’s tournament championship while women’s tennis and softball took home regular season titles.
- On the men’s side for the Vikings, tennis collected the most points for the regular season and CSU claimed runner-up finishes in men’s basketball (regular season) and men’s golf (championship).
- Named in honor of James J. McCafferty, who served as the conference’s first commissioner from 1979-80, the McCafferty Trophy is awarded annually by the Horizon League to a member institution compiling the greatest number of performance points, based on its finish in the League’s 19 championship sports.
- For the sports of men’s and women’s soccer, volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s tennis, softball and baseball, points are awarded based on combined regular-season (60 percent) and championship (40 percent) finishes. For all other sports, points are based on performance in the League championships.
