The
opening day of the 2019 Horizon League Swimming and Diving Championships concluded at the IU Natatorium (NAT), with Oakland pulling the lead for both the men’s and women’s teams.
In the men’s 800 Free Relay Oakland — consisting of Rudy Aguilar-Fernandez, William Gayne, Benjamin Davis, and Mack Flowers — exhibited a stellar performance, touching at 6:27.72, a new Horizon League Championship record.
Here are the highlights from the first day of the championship!
The Golden Grizzlies won three events on the men’s side and two events for the women’s teams by the conclusion of the
second day of competition.
The first event of the evening was the women’s 500 Freestyle. IUPUI sophomore Meagan Ronci won the event with a 4:51.66 finish. Following closely behind was senior Lexie Joy from UIC who got second with a time of 4:51.97.
After a fierce day of competition, day two of the 2019 Horizon League Swimming and Diving championship was in the books!
Day Three of the Horizon League Swimming and Diving Championship concluded on Friday night with Oakland pulling away with the top position for both the men’s and women’s teams.
The men’s team finished the evening with five first-place finishes, while the women’s team had four top spots and set a new championship record.
The Golden Grizzlies – consisting of Grace Shinske, Sydney McDowell, Susan LaGrand and Katie Cowell – set a new Horizon League Championship record in the 400 Medley Relay with a 3:39.45 finish to close the final women’s event of Day Three. Cleveland State finished in second (3:42.67) and IUPUI (3:44.53) finished third.
The 2019 Horizon League Swimming and Diving championship concluded its fourth and final day of competition on Saturday evening with Oakland sweeping the men’s and women’s competition for the sixth year in a row. On the men’s side, the six consecutive championships sets a new Horizon League record.
